Kelvin Shepherd is President and CEO of Manitoba Hydro, a Crown Corporation and Manitoba’s major energy utility serving over 567,000 electrical customers and over 276,000 natural gas customers. Generating nearly all of its electricity from renewable hydroelectric power, Manitoba Hydro is also a major electricity exporter to the United States and other Canadian provinces, and one of the lowest-cost providers of electricity in Canada. It is also the major distributor of natural gas to Manitobans, serving nearly 100 communities. With over 6,200 equivalent full-time employees and capital assets in service in excess of $17 billion, it is one of the leading energy utilities in Canada.
Prior to joining Manitoba Hydro in December 2015, Mr. Shepherd spent 34 years in telecommunications. Beginning his career as an Engineer designing microwave and fiber optic systems, during nearly 20 years with Saskatchewan Telecommunications, Mr. Shepherd worked in a wide variety of technical and managerial roles, eventually rising to the position of Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer. Moving to Winnipeg in 2000, he joined Manitoba Telecom Services as VP Network Services & Chief Technology Officer. During 15 years at MTS, Mr.Shepherd held a variety of roles, including Chief Technology Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and nine years as President.
Mr. Shepherd has been an active volunteer in the community. He was Campaign Chair for the 2015 United Way of Winnipeg’s 50th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign which raised $20.4 million, has been a member of the United Way Campaign Cabinet multiple times and is a member of United Way’s Major Donor Cabinet.
Mr. Shepherd is the Regional Chair of the Canadian Forces Liaison Committee for Manitoba and Northwest Ontario assisting with local business community awareness, engagement and employer support for Reservists.
He is a member of the campaign cabinet for Siloam Mission’s “Make a Room” capital fundraising campaign.
He has acted as Chair of the Awards Jury for Manitoba Chamber of Commerce annual MBiz Business Awards, and has been a multi-year participant in the Downtown Biz CEO Sleepout event, increasing awareness and raising funds to support the elimination of homelessness in Winnipeg. Kelvin also served 10 years on the Board of Trustees of Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, including a term as Chair of the Board.
He is married to Debbie Wolfe and together they are active supporters and/or major donors to several charitable organizations, including the United Way of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Humane Society, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Siloam Mission.
Mr. Shepherd holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and a Certificate in Administration from the University of Regina. He is a registered Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba. In 2015, Mr. Shepherd was presented the Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba Leadership Award which recognizes outstanding achievement or influence towards major Engineering or Geoscientific works and developments undertaken for society’s long-term benefit and/or quality of life.
